Why Are Sunglasses Important?

Have you ever hurt your eyes squinting into the sun? It’s uncomfortable, but that’s not the only risk of not wearing sunglasses — sunlight can be a danger to your eyes.

What we think of as “sunlight” is actually made up of multiple types of light, each with a different frequency. Part of this is ultraviolet radiation, also known as UV light. UV radiation can damage the eye’s tissue over time, including parts of the eye that help you focus and see clearly. These harmful rays can even lead to serious eye conditions including cataracts, macular degeneration, growths on the eyes, and even eye cancer.

Sunglasses don’t just make it easier to see through glare on the snow or direct sunlight, they also protect your eyes from long-term damage and disease. That said, not all sunglasses are created equal — and at Midwest Vision, we’re dedicated to helping you find the most effective, stylish, and affordable sunglasses among our collections.

What to Look for in a Pair of Sunglasses

To determine if sunglasses are going to meet all your vision and eye health needs, there are a few things to look out for:

The Proper Prescription: If you normally use eyewear, prescription sunglasses are a great solution to protecting your eyes without having to rely only on hats with your eyeglasses. Even if you normally wear contact lenses, prescription sunglasses can remove the need for you to use up your contacts on sunny days!

Complete UV Protection: To truly protect your eyes from UV rays, you should look for lenses that offer 100% UV or UV400 protection. Also keep an eye out for lenses that block both UV-A and UV-B types of rays.

Polarized Lenses: Especially useful near water or snow, polarized lenses block glare. Most sunlight is vertical, and when it gets reflected it becomes “polarized,” and travels horizontally. Polarized lenses block virtually all horizontal light that gets reflected, which means that you won’t have to worry about glare.
